Discussion:
Warning: "Use Emails" Does Not Mean "Always Email"

This is a warning to all Arkeia users.

In a Periodic backup, the option to "Use Email" does not actually
mean that the system will email you if certain exceptions occur. For
example, if the backup jobs never starts, the system will not email
you. If the backup process dies or fails for an unexpected reason
(not a connection error), the backup system will not email you.

Basically, do not trust that a backup will trigger emails from the
system.

Internally, we manually have to grep the server.jl2 file to ensure a
backup run..... very sad reporting.

I have chatted with Arkeia support in the past, but was informed that
this was expected (yet undocumented).

Sincerely,
Matthew

Bugzilla 1850 - In version 6.0.8 the periodic backup owner becomes always root

If your backup belong to another user you could configure an email adress for user root and
email notification should work (at least here on our backup server)

Kind regards

I wish it was this bug since I am running 6.0.5 and would not be
impacted.

The bug is actually a resource issue inside of Arkeia and was
confirmed by Arkeia support today. From what I understand, the
problem occurs when multiple periodic backups are scheduled to start
at the same time. The periodic backup process (arkper?) scans the
libraries and drive packs for availability at the start of the job;
however, if multiple periodic backup processes are performing the
exact same scan concurrently, all but one of them will die.

Thus, no email error message.

The solution is to schedule all periodics 5 minutes apart!

Please note that my statement that this was "confirmed by Arkeia"
means that they confirmed the following:
1. The lack of error message is a bug
2. The problem of the process dying is not considered a bug by Arkeia

Some days I feel as if we scaled Arkeia to a level that it should
possibly never be. I know Arkeia has sold some larger clients
recently and would be curious to hear how the implementations are
dealing with these types of problems. The 5 minute gap solution
means that there is a maximum of 288 periodic jobs per day.

I will be writing up a blog post on how we scaled our Arkeia
infrastructure if anyone is curious.

Cheers,
Matthew
